  • Unrealistic or Uninformed Renovation Expectations

  • Posted on October 30, 2013
  • Have a planMost homeowners have some aspect of their home that is in need of change. It doesn’t work, doesn’t fulfill your current needs or you are just tired of it. You either move or remodel. Many decide to stay and change their home. Unfortunately many homeowners are unfamiliar with the remodeling process and have unrealistic expectations.

    It will be completed by…
Never plan on a remodel to be completed on a hard deadline. When you are working on your home there are all kinds of problems that can pop up to delay the completion of the project. Your home could have underlying issues you didn’t know about, materials you wanted get delayed or are no longer available, etc. An experienced contractor can reduce the risk of running into issues like this but there are no guarantees.

    Living with construction is easy…
Each person is different and what one person can put up with another might find unacceptable. You need to truly examine what it’s going to be like to have a portion of your home unavailable to you or to have to deal with the noise of construction before moving forward.

I’ve got this figured down to the penny…
You may have it figured but what you expect it to cost might not be what it ends up costing. During the remodeling process unexpected expenses can pop up. Opening up a wall may reveal issues that need to be fixed. This is especially true the older your home is. Substitutions in product due to unavailability or upgrade will also change the final cost.

    I can do that myself…
It’s not always as easy as those home shows make it look. Many DIY projects get tangled up because they overestimated their own knowledge and abilities or underestimated what is involved or the amount of time the work would take. It might even benefit you to have a consultant look over the project and advise you what will be involved in whatever project you are considering.
